Frequently Asked Questions about Walk-and-Talk Therapy

I invite you to consider therapy outdoors. Lots of research shows that time in nature benefits our mental and physical health. Mindful therapy in a safe natural setting helps reduce stress and increase insight and creativity. And some people find it easier to talk while moving side-by-side rather than sitting face-to-face. FAQs

Where would we go?

I choose trails in the area that are accessible and suitable for clients, and I share location details only with clients. Some locations have some uphill and downhill sections, and some are more level.

What should I wear and bring?

Dress for the weather and wear walking or trail running shoes. You may want a hat and/or sunscreen, and you are welcome to bring a trekking pole (or poles) or a walking stick. Do bring a water bottle.

How long are outdoor sessions, and how far would we walk?

Walking therapy sessions are around 55 minutes long and may include some time sitting. Distances vary and range from one to two miles. Group hiking therapy sessions, when I offer them, are 90 minutes long.

What if the weather is bad?

I’ll contact you about switching to telehealth if the forecast is not conducive to outdoor therapy

Do I need medical clearance?

No, though I do recommend all clients see their primary care provider to help identify any health issues that may impact their mental health. Please do let me know of any medical/health issues that affect you.

What if there’s an emergency?

I do my best to choose safe trails with cell phone coverage. I am also trained in first aid and CPR.

What about privacy and confidentiality?

We’ll discuss privacy and confidentiality issues during a telehealth appointment ahead of time, so you can decide what to do if/when we see other people on the trail and how to respond if we run into people who know you or me.

What about fees, insurance, etc.?

Outdoor therapy is billed like regular therapy. Please see What to Expect from GroundShift Therapy: FAQs.
